The UK is on the cusp of a new drug approval process aimed at tackling an issue that affects men’s sexual health. A new treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED) is poised to launch in the UK next year.
If approved, it will be the first medication approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for treatment of men with ED. It will help men who struggle with erectile dysfunction, who might respond by improving their sexual performance, or who have underlying health conditions, such as diabetes or high blood pressure. The agency has been working on the idea that it will be easier for men to achieve and sustain an erection by taking Viagra, a popular prescription drug for impotence.
The agency is also working on a treatment for high blood pressure, and will be looking at a possible treatment for a rare form of hypertension, known as angina. The treatment is currently only available in the US and Europe, while patients are waiting to see how the EMA will affect them.
The first-line treatment for men with ED is a combination of two drugs, Viagra and a beta-blocker, called dapoxetine. In the US, it's taken once a day, and is available as a tablet, taken 30 minutes to an hour before sex. Dapoxetine is the first FDA-approved treatment for ED, and is the first medication to offer a more convenient alternative.
In Europe, which has the highest prevalence of ED, there is also a small preference for the combination treatment. The EMA has been monitoring the number of new cases of ED since its approval in 1998, which has led to more than 20,000 prescriptions for the treatment. The new treatment for ED, called Cialis, is already available in the US, and is intended to increase men's confidence and intimacy with their partners.
The agency hopes to have approval for Cialis in the second half of this year, with hopes of a UK launch later this year.
“While we have to be realistic about what’s possible before we get to treatment, we can see a big positive from the new treatment for erectile dysfunction, which will help men improve their sexual performance and intimacy with their partners,” said David Graham, medical director at EMA.
Viagra and dapoxetine are the two most popular ED drugs in the US, and the combination has been shown to be more effective than the other two treatments in helping men achieve and sustain an erection.
The agency hopes to have approval for the new treatment for erectile dysfunction in the second half of this year, with hopes of a UK launch later this year.
The UK will be the first US country to offer Cialis to men with erectile dysfunction, and will be the first US country to give a prescription for this treatment in the UK.
“We are very confident that it will be easier to get ED treatment in the US, and that it will also be easier for men to get it in Europe,” said Susan Walsh, director of medical research at EMA.
She said: “In fact, the first US study of men who have sex with men (MSM) found that if they have erectile dysfunction, they were less likely to respond than would men who have never had sex with men (FSM).
“The EMA is also really good at monitoring the response to treatment and working on the timing of treatment. If there is a delay in the start of treatment, we’re trying to get the medication started as soon as possible and keep it in the pharmacy in the US, where it’s very important that the medication starts working.”
The European Union approved Cialis in 1998 and is now available in the US. It’s also one of the first medicines to offer a more convenient alternative to Viagra and dapoxetine. It is available in Europe and the US, while the US drugmaker Pfizer has already been working on a treatment for erectile dysfunction.
In the UK, the drugmaker will be trying to gain approval for two other erectile dysfunction treatments, including two drugs which have been on the market for nearly a decade, including Viagra Connect.
The two treatments have been shown to improve sexual performance, and are available in more than 120 countries, including the US.
The company is also working on a treatment for high blood pressure, which is currently only available in the US and Europe. It will be available in the US next year, but the FDA hasn't approved it yet.
